What is FLOW Retreat?
FLOW Retreat is a five day residential Brazilian Zouk retreat crafted for intermediate-advanced zoukinis looking to progress their skills in connection, comfort and flow in a cozy and trusting environment. Your tour guides for this experience are carefully selected artists who value connection and social dance most of all. In 2020 we are happy to announce the return to Canada of Anderson and Brenda, together with Kuna Malik Hamad, and for the first time ever in North America—China Soulzouk (pending visa).
What do you mean by flow?
The name of our event was chosen in reference to the flow state, which is a state of mind sometimes called “being in the zone”. The flow state is the mental state of being so immersed in what you’re doing that time disappears, and all you feel is a sense of energized focus and pure enjoyment. This retreat is dedicated to cultivating the skill of being in the flow state, using Zouk as the key tool for achieving it.
Why was FLOW Retreat created?
In a digital era, authentic connection can be difficult to come by. With abundant, fleeting stimuli, opportunities to slow down and sink into the moment are scarce.
We designed FLOW Retreat as a dance bridge to connect with ourselves, and from that place, connect with other people. During the retreat we will explore practices and approaches to have skillful dances, full of presence and the state of flow.
How much will the retreat cost?
We are still working with the artists to finalize the budget, but we are aiming to achieve a total price of $950 USD, which includes lodging, instruction and food.
The price is less than comparable retreats in North America and Western Europe; we are able to achieve cost savings because we will be staying communally in a forest lodge rather than an urban hotel. Read more about the accommodations, below.
Where will FLOW Retreat take place and How many people will be participating?
FLOW Retreat will take place in the Strathcona Wilderness Centre, a cozy forest lodge located 20 minutes outside Edmonton, Alberta.
We will be a fantastic cohort of 40 carefully selected souls, including teachers and organizers. There will be a total of 34 spots available:17 leads and 17 follows to form a fantastic cohort that will feel like family (in a good way). Accommodations will be dorm-style bunkbeds (fun!). You can see the accomodations and the lodge in pictures and a video in the following link accomodations.
What is going to be on the menu?
Catering is yet to be finalized, but we are aiming to provide yummy Latin American and Caribbean food, with a different theme each day. Vegetarian options will be available.
What are the dates?
FLOW Retreat will take place from November 4 (starting at 4 pm) to November 8 (finishing at 3 pm), 2020.

How does registration work?
We will select participants based on skill level and stated intentions.
Skill level: achieving the flow state requires a baseline skill level. We will select intermediate to advanced dancers who have a preference for learning by experience, a facility to learn movement by paying attention to their own bodies, and who are comfortable socially dancing Zouk at international congresses.
Stated intentions: it will need to be clear to us that you are aligned with the intention of the retreat.
If you are not invited to participate it will not be a negative reflection of your skills or intentions, simply that we do not think this retreat is the best fit at this time. We expect more people to be interested in the retreat than there are places available.
Submissions of interest are accepted on an ongoing basis and will continue until all the spots are filled. We may follow up with questions or may ask you to submit of video of your social dancing.
Complete our FLOW Retreat interest form to take the first step in joining us. You will find the link here: https://forms.gle/AjGh9g13w5f89Vv2A
Once you are invited you can book your place through a deposit of US$300 that will be fully refundable (minus any applicable fees (i.e.; Paypal fees), up to three months before the event. Fees will not be refunded after August 4, 2020. The full fee is due two months prior to the event on September 4, 2020.
You will also be required to attend FLOW Movement Experience from October 30 to November 1st, 2020 in Edmonton. This is because FLOW Experience is lead by the same teachers and in the weekender, they laid down the foundation for their fundamental concepts. Plus you will have the opportunity to learn from these teachers over the lapse of two weeks which is a unique opportunity.
